1. RegDefense
Section 1

Reg Defense ranked 5th overall out of the five registry-cleaning products we simultaneously tested. It did perform well in the multiple scan test category, tying for 1st place. But it did not shine as well in the other categories. Let’s take a closer look and see how Reg Defense did..

2. Scan Speed Test
Section 2

Reg Defense tested for scan time, number of errors detected,
and accuracy of errors removed...

Reg Defense took 3rd place in the scan speed test, coming in at 3:43 seconds.

With all the products we tested, no mentionable load was added to the CPU, so your machine can still be used while the scan is running. Placing 3rd here isn’t as revealing until we investigate the next couple tests. Let’s see how Reg Defense did in finding and handling errors.

Please see the video to the right to see this test in action for RegDefense.

3. Registry Errors Found and Fixed Tests
Section 3

Reg Defense placed 5th in the number of errors found category with 165 errors.

We discovered that each product may count registry errors differently, so we also tested if the registry errors were actually fixed using third-party software as a benchmark.

In the actual changes made to the registry category, Reg Defense finished 4th in the field as well. Of the 165 errors it detected, surprisingly it made a total of 421 changes to the registry. So it was way off in terms of actually reporting to us how many things would be changed in the registry. This is not necessarily a horrible thing but we feel that is is important the software actually report as close as possible the actual number of changes that will be made to your system.

4. Common Registry Errors Test
Section 4

Testing the ability of Reg Defense to remove some common
and annoying error messages
One of the most common claims and indeed one of the most heavily hyped benefits of registry cleaners is that they are able to fix and eliminate a large range of error messages that crop up on your computer.

Unfortunately, this is simply not the case.  A lot of error messages can not be made to disappear with a simple registry scan, that said they are ale to eliminate some common and very annoying error messages with ease.

Unfortunately, Reg Defense finished 4th in the common registry errors test, fixing only one of the five errors we introduced manually. We can’t say much here, as finding and fixing the most common registry errors is a critical piece to any registry cleaning software.

A video of the test results can be viewed above.

5. Multiple Scans Test
Section 5

Testing whether new errors are found after multiple consecutive scans
For the multiple scans test, Reg Defense shined and tied for 1st place.

In this test, each product ran five successive scans and fixes, and the number of errors detected after each scan were investigated.

Reg Defense scanned and fixed all of its errors in the first scan, and each successive scan found zero errors. These are the results we would expect to see.

So overall Reg Defense seemed to do well in this category. You would think that after one scan and fix, the next scan would produce zero errors so this is no big deal, right?

This surprisingly this not the case for some of the other registry cleaners we tested.  In fact RegCure was a program that continued to find errors after all 5 scans and called into question the accuracy of it results.

It is vitally important that the registry cleaning software you select does not produce false positives (or problems that are really not there) And for this test Registry Fix performed pretty good although not as good as the top 3 programs that detected no additional errors..

To see a video of this test in action see the video above.

6. PC Performance
Section 6

Our final test was the PC Performance to test to see if it was possible to measure any overall improvement in the computers performance as a result of running Reg Defense.

To do this, we used some PC Benchmarking software that measures the performance of the various components of a PC and gives an overall performance score.  First we established the baseline performance score before running the registry scan and then ran the performance scan again to see if the overall score had improved as a result of using Reg Defense.

The baseline score was 458.3 and the score after running Registry Fix was 461.7.  See image below of all registry cleaners and their performance scores.

Reg Defense performed poorly in this category, finishing in last place. It hardly increased overall PC performance at all (0.02%). PC performance is a critical category to many computer users, so we see some room for improvement here for Reg Defense.

7. Summary
Section 7

RegDefense 2009
In closing, Reg Defense placed 5th overall of the five products we tested. It did tie for 1st place in the multiple scans category, but when it came to finding and fixing errors, and ultimately boosting your PC’s performance, Reg Defense fell a little short of our expectations.
